Don: Ready, Yael? Yael: Yep. Don: Here goes 3.1415 9265 3589 7932 3846 2643 3832 79. Ta da! 哒哒!Yael: Wow, you really can recite pi to the thirtieth decimal place. Very impressive, Don! You must have the memory of an elephant. Don: Thanks, Yael, but do elephants really have good memories? Or is that just a saying? Yael: Oh, its real. In fact, a study on elephant memory shows that having a strong memory helps elephants survive in the wild. Don: What do you mean? Yael: Well, scientists studying elephants in Tanzanias Tarangire National Park in Africa knew that some elephants lived through a terrible drought from 1958 to 1961. Now cut to 1993, when theres a second severe drought. Some elephant groups left the park, but only those with members who were old enough to have possibly remembered the earlier drought. The group that stayed in the park was composed of younger elephants. Don: I see. And I assume that the elephants that left the park in 1993 were better able to survive. Yael: Right. The elephants that left the park lost only ten- percent of their calves. But the group that stuck it out lost forty-percent of its young. Don: So in this case, at least, evolution selects for elephants that have memories strong enough to remember stuff from their childhood. Yael: Yep. For elephants, memory is a survival tool. Love and literature in the time of bombs战乱中的爱与文学The Love-charmof Bombs: Restless Lives in the Second World War. By Lara Feigel.《战乱情迷》,Lara Feigel著。FEW histories of the British home front during the second world warreally capture the “mood, temper and climate”, lamented Elizabeth Bowen, a novelist who lived in London at the time. Deaths constant threat fuelled an apocalyptichedonism. The Blitz was grim, but glorious too, in its way. In addition, the experience left a distinct and enduring literary legacy, writes Lara Feigel,an academic at Kings College London, in her new book, “The Love-charm ofBombs”, which came out in Britain in February and is now being published in America. A fast-livingwriting trio Bowen, Graham Greene and Henry Yorke are the main protagonists. They mucked in with the wareffort, but their Blitz was made unique by love affairs. The passions it aroused, and the sense of timelessness that ensued a “suspended present”, Ms Feigel calls it were fertile muses. “These writers, firefighting, ambulance-driving, patrolling the streets, were the successors of the soldier poets of the firstworld war,” the author argues in her introduction. Bomb-hit London was surely of a different order to the peerless carnage of Flanders fields, but the literary impact of the war, she convincingly shows, is comparable. Yorke was at his most prolific then. For the others the experience bore fruit more slowly. The Blitz would provide the setting for Bowens “The Heat of the Day”, and also for Greenes most passionate work, “The End of the Affair”. Peace was a disappointment. The democratic spirit ebbed and life lost its intensity. Bowen, repelled by the Labour Partys 1945 electionvictory, retreated to Ireland with her sexless husband, but really she lived in a world of letters with a Canadian lover. Yorke, who would never be more than a “writers writers writer”, became a drunk. Greene found new love and increased fame, but like the others, Ms Feigel suggests, he would never again “value the present moment so whole heartedly”. This is a strikingly original book. It succeeds in itsambitious combination of group biography and literary criticism. But it is notflawless. Ms Feigel focuses too widely on obscure novelists,in particular a melancholy Austrian emigre, Hilde Spiel, while more illustrious contemporaries Virginia Woolf, Anthony Powell and EvelynWaugh haunt the background like ghosts at the feast. The authors are also tooily believed. Yorke called his fellow firefighters “absolute heroes”, butWaugh, a marine, doubted their courage. Did Waugh have a point? The questiongoes unasked. But these are minor complaints. For the ageing Rose Macaulay, another British novelist of the period, the war was shattering. Shelost a secret lover to cancer, and his letters to a bomb. The need to conceal the mourning deepened the grief. “The Love-charm of Bombs” excels in demonstrating that these years of bleakness and loss were also, for a fortunate few, a time of extraordinary excitement and literary inspiration. /201404/287441The research team have been out since dawn looking for Puck. Its now the height of the shark season, Semu, whos been born at the worst time. Weve been waiting for Puck to have a calf, and now finally shes finally here,哦,看它游的,我们等帕克生孩子很久了,现在终于完成了,were all too so relieved that we can actually see the calf and then the calf is actually good and healthy. Though Puck has been calling to Semu since before he was born, Its thought it would take him a week to learn her call. He swims very close to Pucks head, listening intently to her whistle. The one thing he must avoid is getting separated from her, this would mean certain death. Puck may not eat for a week, she cannot risk losing sight of him for a moment. Oh,shark, theres a shark, thats a shark, long one. approaching from behind, the family are unaware its closing. Semu is in grave danger. Oh, the shark looks like a tiger, it looks huge.Yeah,It was big. Boy, its the shark, the shark. 鲨鱼,鲨鱼!One of Pucks daughters rushes in to help protect Semu. 201405/300232

Scientists who study human sperm have long wonderedwhether human sperm could somehow sense the presence of an egg. Then, just about a decade ago, it was discovered that sperm have proteins on them that react to the presence ofcertain chemicals. In fact, these are the same molecules used by nerve cells in your nose when you sniff out a scent. Nothing that looks like a nose of course, but these chemical-sensing proteins act like noses. Researchers call these sensory devices “olfactory receptors.” More recent studies have startedfiguring out what kind of chemical attracts a sperm. The most effective spermattractor is called “bourgeonal.” Bourgeonal is a floral scent. When sperm sense the presence of bourgeonal, they race toward it. Their speed goes from eighteen point three micrometers per second up to a whopping thirty point one. The most likely thing isthat bourgeonal just happens to be structurally similar to another chemical produced by a female egg. /201407/315762
